Acknowledging Exceptional Achievement: Dr. Gunter Erfurt Receives the 2023 Alexander Edmond Becquerel Prize

In a notable recognition of his substantial contributions to the advancement of solar energy, Dr. Gunter Erfurt, Chief Executive Officer of Meyer Burger Technology AG and Chairman of Meyer Burger Research AG, has been honored with the esteemed 2023 Alexander Edmond Becquerel Prize.

The significance of this achievement lies in Dr. Erfurt’s pivotal role in re-establishing the production of silicon solar cells and modules within Europe. As the leader of Meyer Burger, he orchestrated a strategic transformation that shifted the company’s focus from equipment supply to becoming a leading European manufacturer of solar cells and modules. This shift occurred even amidst the challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, as Meyer Burger successfully adopted automated manufacturing solutions for silicon heterojunction technology with smart-wire contacting.

Dr. Erfurt’s commitment to the revival of photovoltaic production within Europe goes beyond operational achievements. He has consistently advocated for the resurgence of local PV manufacturing, actively engaging in conferences, debates, and media contributions. Through his efforts, he has emerged as a prominent figure in the industry, fostering meaningful conversations with European institutions and enhancing awareness about the potential of solar energy.

This achievement marks the culmination of Dr. Erfurt’s journey of expertise and leadership. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from TU Freiberg, Germany, in 2003 and has since held pivotal positions in the solar industry, including Director of Solarworld Innovations. He joined Meyer Burger Germany as a Director in 2015 and later ascended to Group Chief Technology Officer in 2017. Since April 2020, he has served as CEO, steering the company’s transformation and growth.

The 2023 Alexander Edmond Becquerel Prize will be officially presented during the opening session of the 40th European Photovoltaic Conference, scheduled to take place from September 18th to 22nd, 2023, in Lisbon.
